Lighthouse

The Lighthouse at Makapu'u Point

The primary attraction (besides the view) at Makapu'u Point is an old lighthouse that warns ships of the rocky coastline. It is one of two lighthouses of which I am aware on Oahu and is located approximately two thirds up the steep coastline. In the 1940s a military plane, flying patrol in bad weather during wartime, mistook this lighthouse for one elsewhere on the island, became disoriented, and flew into the mountain side killing all aboard. The irony, of course, is that lighthouses are intended to save lives. In this one instance a mistake proved deadly. A plaque memorializing the airmen's deaths is located near the top of the point.
