![]() Nocturnal Ocean Last evening I went to Fort DeRussey Beach in Waikiki to make some photos. I worked/played until it was dark, and when I was finished I walked onto a cement pier that extends into the Pacific Ocean at one of the hotels. It was after eight o'clock and except for stars and hotel lights it was dark. Inspired by Steve Paxton's night photography (Midnight Glow) I decided to try making a photo of the pier and the night ocean with waves breaking on the horizon, and made several attempts using various long exposures. The results, however, were disappointing because a strong, yellow hotel security light made each picture look unnatural. Unfortunately, the only way to preserve the image without the yellow cast was to post process it heavily to make it look more like a contemporary painting than a photograph. This image is the best of three attempts. I think it's the sort of image you either love or hate. Post processing consisted of desaturating the cement pier (to get rid of the yellow tint) and changing the color of the water by sliding the hues bar to one side. The night sky was darkened a bit, but otherwise left alone (it's amazing how much color the sensor records in the night sky even an hour after sundown). I ran the whole photo through Neat Image to reduce noise. For those who may be interested here is a montage of four versions. I will keep trying night photography until I get the hang of it. For now, all I can offer is a stylized version of the Pacific Ocean at night and, of course, a recommendation that you check out Steve Paxton's work. ISO 800, 65s, f/3.5, 18mm of 18-55mm | |
