lava flow

Lava Flow into the Pacific Ocean

The live lava flow on the Big Island ultimately pours into the ocean, where cool water gives off a constant cloud of steam and hardens the lava. It can be seen best at night, when the lava glows in the steam cloud. The Big Island is growing as lava reaches the ocean, hardens, and forms solid rock. Today, Chain of Crators Road runs along lava formed in this manner. This image was made well after sundown. After taking these photos we hiked back to our car, a three mile trip through the rocky lava field, illuminated by flash lights. The night sky was totally clear, with no moonlight, so countless stars were visible, including the milky way. The whole experience was a terrific opportunity.
