outrigger canoes

Outrigger Canoes

Every day outside my home on the Ala Wai Canal outrigger canoe enthusiasts paddle the length of the canal and out into the Pacific Ocean. Some of the canoes hold six to eight paddlers; others hold only one. Paddling (as opposed to rowing) is a traditional Hawaiian sport with many 'clubs' practicing their sport and competing against one another in races. In this image I caught two single outrigger canoes being paddled by friends who were spending as much time and effort talking as they were paddling. That, of course, is also part of the fun.
