Thriving in a Bleak Landscape

Hawaii is loaded with many micro-climates. It is easy to find a field of cactus or agave plants on a hillside, only to go a few miles away and find lush vegitation. Usually it's a matter of turning a corner around a mountain at the edge of the ocean, where one side of the mountain is wet and the other is dry. At Makapu'u Point the path takes one along the dry side of the island. At the top, however, the view is along the wet side of the mountain range. In this photo, a large agave plant is growing on a hillside covered with brown grass and rock. The selective color helps it stand out.
